Wrap it up and swim in it until I drown
Feb. 21st, 2007 07:24 pmSo... according to this article, Appeals Court Judge Raymond Randolph says "Cuba -- not the United States -- has sovereignty over Guantanamo Bay."
I think that Fidel would be delighted to hear this news. I must be misunderstanding the ruling, because it's being lauded as a victory for the administration. Giving legal control of a US base to one of our longest, least enemific enemies would keep those terrorists from getting into a US court of law, but I'd think that a Cuban court of law would be far more sympathetic to them.
Lots of projects still not getting done, and I threw a couple of others on top of the bin while I was at it. But that TiVo certainly knows who's boss. And I watched GlenGary Glenn Ross again, which made me want to reread Speed the Play while watching Scarface.
EDIT:
Today I got spam with the subject "He So Karamazov". It's like Martin Lawrence read a book or something. I like it.

Date: 2007-02-22 05:07 am (UTC)I believe you are misunderstanding things. Technically Cuba does have sovereignty, always has. They chose in 1896, as part of the treaty to end the Spanish-American War, to lease the land in perpetuity to the U.S. the Castro brothers reject the treaty, so I doubt today's ruling causes them any extra joy.
That lease causes a gray area that the current administration is exploiting to its fullest. (And the court is supporting.) While the U.S. controls the land by means of the lease, the territory itself is still Cuban, thus prisoners have no right to have their cases tried by U.S. civilian courts. Cuban courts won't take the case for the same reason, and the incredible risk of starting an outright war with the U.S. That would be suicide for the Castro brothers.
