So I leave the house for work and drive Nauti, leaving at 0940 and arriving at 1000. About twenty minutes.
I leave the house for work on the bike, leaving at 0910 and arriving at 0935. About twenty-five minutes.
(The route is essentially the same--Middlefield to Castro, and then by auto down Central to Mary and then back up Evelyn to Berndardo, but by bike down Evelyn to Bernardo.)

Well, you are overshooting and backtracking with the car route, and as a bike, you're probably able to avoid the worst of the car traffic around Castro/Evelyn to go the direct route.

Yeah, but with the car route I'm also driving 50/55mph with fewer stop lights and cross-traffic.
Still, I'm hoping that this is a consistent occurrence.

One thing I will not miss is sitting at the Evelyn/Mary intersection on the way home for between five and ten minutes hoping to eventually make my left turn.

Sounds like a really good argument for riding your bike whenever possible.

Yeah, once I can remember to pack the stuff I need. (Keys, water, headphones today. But I chalk that up to inexperience.)

Drive it a few times, bike it a few times, to see how the data set develops.

Then you can see if the additional automobile overhead is worth it.

Oh, I intend to switch over to biking at least some of the time, simply because I'm not gettig to the gym as often as I'd like, and a two mile walk at lunchtime isn't cutting it as far as physical activity goes. I was just surprized by this single datum, because it was entirely not what I expected. And if it maintains, I will continue to be surprized. (:

Funny how that works! What's the distance?

Between four and a half and five miles. The auto route is closer to five, the bike route closer to four and a half.

That's pretty typical in my observation. For some reason there's a lot of unseen overhead in short car trips. You might factor in the extra time it takes you to get ready on the bike (bottle of water, helmet on, etc) to make it more realistic. I know I usually forget about those bits. Still, door to door it takes me about 15-20 minutes to get to work via car and 25-30 minutes by bike, but I'm going 45 mph or better on some 3 of the 4+ miles in the car.

I time things from when I lock the front door to when I arrive at the door of my destination, figuring that those are good endpoints for comparison.

I only bike 1.5 miles to work, but it's about ten minutes faster to bike than to drive. Mostly because I can take a far more direct route and I can park much closer to my destination.

I wish I'd had a chance to bike my old commute ( 4 miles straight shot down el Camino ) - except I don't like riding on or near el camino. ;)
